We asked a few of our members to say what they liked most about being part of the church. Read their full testimonials below.
I feel I have a big family here with whom I share my happiness and worries. They always back me with their prayers.
I was filled with the impression of a Christian congregation that was thoroughly equipped with the knowledge and a living practice of the word of God.
Where are you from?
My name is Silvia I am from Italy and would like to tell you how I became a born again Christian. I must explain that in my country the term Christian is widely used by the majority of Catholics as well, so I use the term ‘born again Christian’ to identify the change of direction that my life took since I accepted the Lord Jesus as my personal Saviour.
I grew up in a family where my parents were both committed Jehovah Witnesses. When I was 13, my parents decided to leave the organisation so one of my uncles introduced my family to a group of Evangelical Christians gathering in a small hall in a town not too far from where we lived. They encouraged my parents to send me to the Summer Christian Camp and during
that week I opened my heart to the Lord Jesus and accepted Him as my Lord and Saviour.
What impressed you most when you first attended?
What struck me the most was the fact that I was reading straight from the Bible, using only the Bible and nothing else. For the first time in my life I realised the Bible had a proper message for mankind and for me directly, rather than being just a “supplementary” book. I discovered that there was a real meaning behind those verses I had to learn by heartwhilst with the JWs. For me, this was the greatest discovery! I begun to read my New Bible regularly everyday and felt the need to share my faith with other believers witnessing of my Salvation through baptism.
The first time at Bermondsey Gospel Hall was on a Sunday morning in 2003 when I visited with my husband also a born again Christian and my daughter then only three years old. The morning meeting is something very special because is when the focus is on worship the wonderful work of the Lord Jesus on the Cross and His resurrection. Is the time when all believers come together remembering the most precious sacrifice ever made on earth. We felt this was the right place for us to be and we soon found out that the way the Lord was remembered in this UK assembly was exactly the same as in our home assembly back in Italy. So we happily stayed for the whole meeting observing as visitors and as soon as the meeting was over one of the elders approached us introducing himself and asked us more about our background which we were more than happy to share.
Why did you decide to return and make this church your spiritual home?
We decided to make Bermondsey Gospel Hall our own spiritual home as we felt peace and great joy in our hearts as a confirmation by the Lord that He wanted us to be part of that assembly. Since we are at Bermondsey Gospel Hall we can truly say to you dear friend,
that is not the fact that being part of this church in particular that makes you a better person but is the fact that only when we allow the word of the Lord to deeply penetrate our hearts followed by a great desire to obey God’s commandments in our everyday life that we can be part of the family of God either here at Bermondsey or anywhere else in the world.
